Hobbits could be pretty ungrateful at times. Of course, Alexander had realized this ages ago. He would often overhear it from the shadows, how the rangers were a scraggly, untrustworthy people. Then again, he never really did this whole ranger for the fame of it all, he did it because he was supposed to. Still, it always felt really strange for everyone, even the people at Bree, to consider him and the rangers dangerous, even though they were the ones going out of their way in keeping the remnants of Angmar from just rushing into Eriador and pretty much destroying anything. Alex was no stranger to the history of his line; the last time Angmar encroached south, King Earnur of Gondor had to step in. So it was this time, during the night when all the respectable Hobbits had taken to their homes, that Alexander skulked around the shadows of the Shire. Nothing really happened here. Well, sometimes something came up but the drama always quickly blew over. The Shire wasn't really a place where things got turned on their head. It was a beautiful place where Hobbits spent their lives, passed everything onto their children, which were passed onto their children. Change rarely, if ever came. And in part, Alexander was glad for that; it allowed him to see the fruits of his labors, and a place to secretly get away when he wanted to. With soft steps barely making sounds as he walked through the green grass, it didn't take long for Alex to make his way to the markets unseen. Sneaking around some of the houses, he snagged a couple apples before heading away into the forest. He could return and eat his meal in peace; there was always something about fruits and vegetables grown in the Shire; they always tasted better than in any place he could get them. Passing through the various trees, he brought one of the apples to his mouth, taking a large bite. tags: serena notes: THIEF CODED BY ELECTRIC OF GS

❝come away little light; come away to the darkness. in the shade of the night we'll come looking for you. we are calling for you ––– ❞
MADE BY ★MEULK OF GS | The Shire was not a place she ventured to all that often. Serena wished she had more of a chance to do so, because the vast pasture of green was a beautiful place to behold. There was a peace to be found there that was sorely lacking within all of Middle Earth. Her own home certainly did not evoke such a sense of comfort and ignorance to the world. She glanced upward at the night sky with a slightly mournful look. She wondered if Mirkwood would ever be returned to her former splendor, but it was not a sight she had borne witness to within the near two thousand years she had walked Middle Earth. At least there was still beauty to be found outside the borders of the forest. The rangers certainly did an admirable job of defending this quiet, quaint area.
That was the reason she had ventured this far from her home. Tracking a ranger could be a difficult task at times, but she had reason to believe her friend was within the vicinity. The tongues of men were often loose when they imbibed enough alcohol. Bree was always a place to stop for any information, and that was where she had gained hers. Traveling by night was certainly easier than garnering the curious and awed gazes of the Hobbits. An elf had to be a rare sight to see for many of them. Strangers were not always viewed favorably to the insulated race of Halflings, but she supposed it made sense. Not many wished for unwelcome change to be brought in their lives of familiarity and comfort.
For now she simply cast a lingering glance over the sleepy hobbit holes before silently venturing to the shroud of trees that bordered the village. Her keen eyes were able to stop the slight indentations that spoke of previous footprints where a man had walked before her. It did not take her too long to catch up with the familiar figure of Alexander. “Either you are purposely allowing me to track you, or you have grown less careful since we last met. I see your patrols have lead you back here.” |

Oh? Someone had come to visit him? And a visitor from a far away land no less. Serena. Yes, he recognized the woman as she remarked at the ability to track him. Would it have mattered even if he did all he could to remain hidden. Elves were fairly capable of noticing even the smallest differences. Nevertheless, he didn't really take it as a blow to his pride as a ranger. He didn't feel like danger was nearby in the Shire. "I can relax a little here. I mean, see for yourself; thanks to what the rangers do, this place is as peaceful as it is. There are few places I can relax, this is one of them."Granted, he couldn't relax here to the extent he could in Imladris, but this was really just a small pocket of the world that for a little bit, Alexander could breathe freely. The scent of green grass and fragrant flowers were really something that made all the crap he went through all the more worth it. Even if they were wary of him, even if they really did not like him, it gave a sense of satisfaction. That said, he finally turned to face Serena, taking another bite out of the apple that he had managed to snatch before tossing one towards the elven princess. If she didn't catch it, well then more for him he guessed; he really loved these things. Taking another bite and quickly chewing and swallowing. Alexander figured that it might be time to get down to business. "You are a very long way from the Halls of Mirkwood, what brings you all the way to Eriador?" He inquired. Perhaps the orcs were starting to spread to her as well? They'd been becoming a bit more active lately, he wasn't quite sure what was going on. Though the fact that they'd been getting more riled up beyond a few scattered raids really did not bode well; that usually predated some sort of cataclysm, he figured. tags: Cassandra Undómielnotes: o3o You can always make it up CODED BY ELECTRIC OF GS

❝come away little light; come away to the darkness. in the shade of the night we'll come looking for you. we are calling for you ––– ❞
MADE BY ★MEULK OF GS | Anyone could relax once they passed through these peaceful borders. Serena wondered if her home had ever held such a green splendor, but the memories of her youth were often filled with running from an encroaching darkness. Hopefully these hobbits would never have to learn such horrors within their lifetimes. Sometimes she considered the mortal races more lucky than the eldar with their shortened life spans. Over the countless years memory could become a sorrow deeper than any ache or scar. “There is beauty here that one would be hard pressed to find anywhere else in Middle Earth. The rangers have done an admirable job of keeping these borders safe from orcs or any other threat.”
The scent of flowers and of dewy grass was a heady thing for her. Serena had been surrounded by nature for as long as she could remember, and most elves worked in harmony with the world around them. Perhaps she would attempt to travel here more often when her father allowed it of her. Amber eyes flickered to the brief glance of red that was soon arcing towards her. Her hand reached out to deftly catch the fruit before bringing it to her lips. The scent of it was crisp and sweet, and that same sweetness lingered on her tongue after the first bite. Serena wondered if even Imladris or Lorien could boast of apples this sweet.
“Information that I am attempting to confirm with someone that faces the same creatures I do.” There had been an unsettling amount of skirmishes with orcs as of late along the borders of Mirkwood. The beasts did not dare to tread so close to her home, but they had been growing more relentless as of late. Scouts would return back to the halls injured or with bound orcs that would give no information no matter how persuasive her efforts. “The orcs have become more daring as of late. Increased border raids and in larger groups. Have you seen similar ill tidings along your patrols?” |

Though he wouldn't let Serena wound his pride by tracking him, he most certainly would take pride in the results of the handiwork he and his rangers had worked so hard to achieve. Not just orcs as she had guessed either. Occasionally some ruffians tried to cause trouble, but it was usually taken care of. But that didn't stop the question of hers from surprising him. Had Mirkwood been dealing with increased orcs as well? It wouldn't be that unusual, the forest was to the east of the mountains, a popular spot for the creatures. It was small wonder that if they were increasing on his part, they might be increasing elsewhere. "They've been becoming more frequent yes. Thankfully it's not at a point where they're overwhelming." He affirmed her suspicions, but remarked it hadn't gotten that bad yet. It didn't mean they should sit around though; something had to be done, and they really had to figure out what was going on. Everything seemed to be stirring; the elves were clearly getting more active defending their borders, he had heard possibilities concerning Umbar, and the orcs were getting more active and restless as well. There was even talks of... "The mountains in general seem to be in a tizzy." He stated simply, taking another bite. He had heard whispers of something going on with the Dwarves, but he sincerely doubted that whatever it was had anything to do with the increase of orcs. No, something else was at work here. Perhaps a new Warchief had managed to take control and organize the rabble? That might be. Orcs were fearful and scattered creatures, it wouldn't be completely impossible for them to be whipped into shape by a sufficient leader. "I wonder if they're spreading elsewhere." It was more an idle statement than a question. tags: Cassandra Undómielnotes: OTL good enough CODED BY ELECTRIC OF GS

ღ | Alexander Elessar | ღ | I think this is the first thread in a long while my charrie is having a serious convo with Alex. :'D |
MADE BY ★MEULK OF GS | It had her wondering if she should travel to Imladris and Lorien after this visit and speak with their respective leaders about this. An increase in orcs happened at times, but she felt a darkness behind this growing unease. Her father had grown more pensive as of late over these matters. He would not answer her questions directly, which had her wondering how far into his past he was delving. Serena would never allow Mirkwood to fall while there was still breath in her body, but it felt like a slowly losing battle with an increase of elves sailing west. Times were changing no matter how disassociated she felt with the concept. Serena took another pensive bite into her apples as these somber thoughts clouded her mind.
“No, not yet. It will come to that point if we do not find the reason for their increase in numbers. There is a darkness creeping along the edges of what little peace we are maintaining.” His confirmation only had her expression becoming a little more grim. A part of her had hoped it was merely along the borders of Mirkwood, which meant a raiding party or two of elves could take care of the problem. No, this would require more manpower and cooperation between the elven kingdoms and the rangers. Eventually the kingdoms of man would need to step in, but that seemed like a long ways off.
Were the mountains in that much of an upset? Serena supposed she should seek out more rumors in regards to the dwarves, but their race as a whole did not concern her. Perhaps her father’s dislike had passed onto her after all. She did not wish them any ill will at least. No, her main concern was the increase in orcs. “Have you spoken with your guardian? No doubt they would have insight. I may travel to Lorien after this to see what their Lord’s insight is. My father would rather ignore any troubles outside of our borders, but I cannot allow for that to happen.” |

Another bite. He really couldn't get over how sweet these apples were. Maybe he could snag a few more and find some other uses for them? Cook them into something else. Though campfires were hardly the right tools to bake something involving apples, the more he thought of it. But she had a point; speaking with his guardian. That might not have been a bad idea, now that she brought it up. If he really did end up heading down to Gondor, then he'd probably stop at Rivendell along the way anyway, and there he could at least start asking questions and get some guidance. He doubted that Rivendell was ignorant of the growing restlessness of the orcs. Still, hearing about her father, well that was always quite the laugh to hear. "Good thing Mirkwood has you, then." He paid a compliment. At least one of the royals was doing something. To hear it from Serena, her father seemed like the type to just lounge around and do nothing ever while everything built up around him before "oh hell, when did all these orcs get in my throne room?" At least with Serena on guard, she was able to get things a bit more in order, and she doubtlessly saved more lives than her father would have. Still, meeting her father wasn't exactly something he'd want to do. "Still, mirror mirror on the wall, right?" He wasn't sure what Imladris could offer him exactly. He knew that it would be a huge boon in aiding him with this problem, but he had heard of Lorien, of how its leader held wisdom untold of. One of the wisest beings of Middle-Earth, and Serena would have their council. He was sure that the elven princess would be in fairly good hands, and he knew better than to worry concerning her skill. Serena was a big girl, she could handle herself. But she might know other things. "Anything from Lake-Town?" tags: Cassandra Undómielnotes: If you like he can start trolling <3 CODED BY ELECTRIC OF GS

❝come away little light; come away to the darkness. in the shade of the night we'll come looking for you. we are calling for you ––– ❞
MADE BY ★MEULK OF GS | There was so much to do within the next coming days. Serena would have to travel east to Imladris and then head south to Lorien. Perhaps she should wait for Alexander to finish patrol in the Shire and then travel with him back? There was more safety in numbers, and she would enjoy some company on her travels. She took another bite of her apple and enjoyed the sweetness it had to offer. Such sweet fruits could not be found within Mirkwood, unless in personal gardens. It had her longing for home a little, but she enjoyed these times she could venture beyond the borders of the forest. Serena dreaded the day her father’s crown would pass to her, because it meant her wandering tendencies would be cut down severely.
“My father is a good ruler to his people. He simply looks too much inward to concern himself about the rest of Middle Earth.” Her lips quirked into a small smile at his attempt at humor. It had her wondering if the crownless king would one day meet her father. No doubt it would be an interesting meeting. No doubt he would feel more welcome in Imladris than ever in the Halls of Mirkwood. There was such a peace and light within the other to elf kingdoms than with her own. Wood elves held little trust for those that did not belong under the boughs of her dark, shrouded trees. Serena sincerely hoped to change that in the future when the darkness had been chased away once and for all.
“There is not much news from Lake -town. Our trade with them has been steady, but there have been more orc sightings near it’s borders. I have a small group of scouts that watch the borders closely. It would be a hindrance should one of our trading sources fall to too many raids after all.” Serena had not spoken with her father about protecting the town that did not fall inside their borders. Hopefully this was nothing more than a new war chief somehow organizing the rabble into a coherent unit. It would be difficult to handle, but at least these bands of orcs would destabilize once their leader had been taken down. |

Lake-Town was silent then? Perhaps they had yet to spread so far. Alexander gave no thought to the creature sleeping within the mountain; the dragon known as Smaug. Supposedly, ever since he had gotten the treasures of Erebor he so desired, Smaug was just content to roll around in his treasures and leave everyone else well alone. Even Lake-Town had returned to some tranquility; they seemed rather certain that Smaug would not awaken and rain fire and death down upon them anytime soon. Alexander was quite grateful for that; they would protect Eriador, but he doubted his rangers would be enough for a dragon. Taking a brief look around, Alex motioned in the direction that some woods lay in. Expecting her to travel, he started walking. "It sounds like then, that the creatures have for the most part been able to be contained in the farthest reaches of the north; in the mountains." That meant that things weren't worrisome just yet. Still, perhaps he should petition Imladris for some aid? He was certain that Skylar wouldn't mind coming along. Regardless of how things were between them, he doubted it'd take much coaxing for him to come out of Imladris. Options swirled through his mind on how to handle the growing restlessness. "Still, the fact that you have sought me out is not exactly the best tidings." The fact that these things seemed to be happening in unison was not exactly something that he was thrilled to hear about. "What of the forest itself? Is there anything growing within the trees?" In hindsight, Mirkwood would be an excellent place to stow away. The Elves were vigilant, but not omniscient. Those with enough skill or luck could sneak away and find the perfect hiding spot. tags: Cassandra Undómielnotes: Maybe a little <3 CODED BY ELECTRIC OF GS

❝come away little light; come away to the darkness. in the shade of the night we'll come looking for you. we are calling for you ––– ❞
MADE BY ★MEULK OF GS | Serena followed after Alexander easily as he beckoned her forward. It was easier to have their conversation while patrolling to make sure they did not miss anything of importance. She doubted anything sinister would attempt to attack this night, but that did not mean she allowed her senses to go lax. Amber eyes flickered every so often to the surrounding trees as she idly bit into her apples. She would need to take a few of these back with her during her journey to Imladris. If she saved the seeds from the apple, then she could grow her own tree back within Mirkwood. It would take a few years, but what were a few decades to one who had already lived so many? Perhaps she should not think of the passing of the years as something so idle, though.
“That is good tidings at the very least, but for how long? We need to take care of this before the threat grows larger.” Serena would be able to acquisition a few scouts from Mirkwood’s guard if she worded the need to her father correctly. Alexander surely would be able to convince his guardian to send aid as well. Together the two of them would come up with some sort of solution to make sure everything ended well. This would not be the last time the orcs would grow in numbers and attacks. The best thing they could do was rise against the threat every time it came up to protect those unable to defend themselves.
“I sought you out because you know better than anyone what we face.” He traveled the ranges of the north as his duty, and she did the same with Mirkwood. It was how the two of them had met in the first place. “There have been more nest raids against the spiders this past year. I beg my father to allow me to have a scouting party to seek out the source and eliminate it, but he’s more concerned with holding our borders than pushing back. Perhaps it is for the best for now. Who knows what really is lurking at the source of it all?” |

So she had been dealing with giant spiders? Well that probably wasn't the most pleasant thing in the world to deal with. Especially with the fear that those crawlies probably brought. Being trapped in a cocoon waiting to die if they caught you must have been a completely horrible way to go. "Spiders huh? You sure you're handling all that okay?" He asked. Orcs were one thing, wolves were another thing, and spiders were something else entirely. Oh sure, he figured that they died to a good shot from a bow or by stabbing them to death all the same. But there had to be some nervousness in there. Making his way through the forest, he found himself effortlessly bobbing and weaving through the various trees and the shrubbery that might have proved to be an obstacle otherwise. It was a sign of just how used to these woods he happened to be. "It must not be pretty what with having to consider the worst case scenario, all those hairy legs and all." Needless to say, he really didn't envy her for having to deal with spiders. He also had a feeling that she preferred to keep her distance and shoot at them, not that it wasn't really her M.O. to begin with, she seemed to prefer bows after all. Unfortunately, there really wasn't all that much he could do about it. "Sorry, but I can't help much with spiders; we don't have them here." Because he and his rangers never really dealt with spiders when it came to the Remnants of Angmar, they really didn't have all that much experience. The nastiest creatures they ever really fought were wargs. He was pretty sure wargs were tougher than spiders, but still. "That said, don't wander off on your own. At least wait until you have something defending you." Serena wasn't stupid, but he still felt the need to remind her not to investigate a bunch of man eating spiders on her own. tags: Cassandra Undómielnotes: fine, he will be concerned CODED BY ELECTRIC OF GS

MADE BY ★MEULK OF GS | No, handling the grotesque spiders was not all that pleasant of a task for anyone. Serena had fought enough of them to learn she preferred fighting orcs to them. The idea of being spun into a web to later be consumed as an evening meal was not much of a comforting thought. It angered her when she thought of the creatures, because a few of them had managed to capture her people before they could be saved. “I am handling them as well as anyone can. Remaining on guard against them and these increased orc raids has split our focus, though. Something has to be done about one of them or they will creep through our split defenses.” It was a never ending struggle she sometimes tired of during her weaker moments.
Serena followed Alexander as he weaved his way through the trees and shrubbery. It did not bother her all that much, since she also had spent much of her life living amongst trees and greenery. The landscape was certainly not as familiar to her as Mirkwood, though. She wondered if Mirkwood had ever looked this lovely before the darkness had started swallowing up the forest. “Yes, the hairy, spindly legs are not that appealing to see. I am more akin to watching out for their fangs whenever one gets close enough to attack me.” Serena very much preferred using her bow in combat, but she had her daggers for when an enemy would get too close for her bow to be of much use.
She had not expected him to be of much help with the spiders. They only seemed to originate within Mirkwood, and she would not wish for them to spread to the rest of Middle Earth. “I have no intention of wandering into that sort of danger on my own. It would be far too risky without more elves with me, or knowing more about the source of it all.” It was a topic that could go in constant circles, though. Serena had tracked him down and had spoken to him about her concerns. “How have you fared, though? It has been a few months since I saw you last.” |

Splitting to fight both orcs and spiders? Divide and conquer, yikes. That wasn't really something he was happy to hear about. Even when organized for the most part, orcs still tended to just rush the field and rely on overwhelming numbers to really carry the day for them. The idea of them using actual battlefield tactics was not a thrilling one. Though to be fair, it didn't really sound like they were. Rather it just sounded like Serena was essentially caught between a rock and a hard place. Perhaps the girl should use a vacation? Maybe taking a trip down to Imladris would actually be perfect for her to unwind. Still, he appreciated her inquiries. It reminded him that at least she was looking out for him. He had his rangers, and they were all his friends, but elf friends looking out for you were nice as well. "It's been normal for me. Well, as normal as you can get anyway." He snorted. "Orc, orc, orc, wolves, orc, wolves, wolves, orc, orc, orc, and an occasional warg." He paused for a moment before he added on another issue that he was having outside as well. "Oh and bandits causing problems for everyone too."Pausing for yet another moment, he was also reminded of a few instances that were, in all honesty, pretty unnerving. "And trolls, if we're really unlucky when night comes rolling around." The first couple times had been scary, but he'd slowly been getting used to it. Though he had heard word that there was a trio of cave trolls romping about somewhere and causing problems for people, though he hadn't been able to get a track on any of them. Then he needed the right moment to strike. tags: Cassandra Undómielnotes: but there's no trolling D: CODED BY ELECTRIC OF GS

❝come away little light; come away to the darkness. in the shade of the night we'll come looking for you. we are calling for you ––– ❞
MADE BY ★MEULK OF GS | At least nothing seemed too out of the ordinary for Alexander. She had been on a few patrols with him and his rangers before when she could spare the time. Fighting orcs never seemed to be out of style for beings like them. Sometimes she wondered if there would be a time to set aside their weapons and simply enjoy what life had to offer. Serena would feel selfish for thinking such thoughts immediately afterwards, because she fought to protect her people and her friends as well. There were the peaceful moment in between that she could enjoy. This visit was placing her more at ease than she had been for days. Hopefully the journey to Imladris would be an enjoyable one without any orcs or bandits attacking them on the road.
“It seems everyone is growing bolder as of late,” she mused with a small sigh. At least their efforts kept places like this safe. These Hobbits would never have to worry about fighting orcs or facing off against wargs. Ignorance could be bliss for those that were able to afford it. The rangers were more than adept at keeping these borders safe, though. Serena wished she had more of their ilk for her own Mirkwood complement. There was more joviality to be found with them than with the wood-elves. Idly she finished her apple and idly picked out the seeds to keep for when she ventured back home. These apples would be lovely to have within Mirkwood.
“Trolls? I am surprised they would venture down from their mountain caves. At least they are dimwitted enough to handle with good numbers and skill.” Their size really did make them quite clumsy and easily handled from a distance. Serena had not come across a troll for many years now, but they were not found within Mirkwood. No, her main quarry were spiders and orcs now. “So we shall go to Imladris together once you have finished your patrol up here? If you are in need of aid, then I am at your disposal.” |

Alexander quickly shook his head in answer to Serena's inquiry concerning the trolls. "Oh no, they aren't exclusive to the mountains. The Trollshaws are filled with them." It was a reasonable assumption to make though. Her orcs usually came from the mountains, it wouldn't be all that unreasonable to assume that was where the trolls also made their camp. And that was true; the mountains could be filled with them at times. But unfortunately, eastern Eriador had a tendency to be plagued with them, and dumb or not, their brute strength made them highly dangerous. He appreciated her offer for company though. Now that he thought about it, why not? If she was going to be headed there anyway, and so was he, it'd be nice to at least go together rather than heading there alone. So, with a smile, he nodded. "I would appreciate the company however, the journey to Rivendell is often quite dangerous." Reaching down, he took another bite of the apple. He could actually savor his fruit, rather than a certain elven girl who just wolfed it down like it was her last meal. But he did have to be fair in that it would be dangerous. Perhaps she'd never run into them though. Yes, she would have to be ready to battle and fight for her life, not that such a thing was actually an issue for her; she was the princess of Mirkwood, she was a big girl and she definitely was one of their better soldiers and sentinels for sure. "The Trollshaws lie to the west of Rivendell, so we may actually run into them." He explained. There was a pretty good chance that they would have to cross through them. Needless to say, they would have to be on their guard during the night, but hopefully they could just clear the damn thing during the day, not have to fight any trolls. tags: Cassandra Undómielnotes: serena is more adorable to troll CODED BY ELECTRIC OF GS
