[/div]It would be some time before Carina had to worry about running the bakery on her own. Over time, she had taken on more responsibilities and been able to do more tasks without the aid of others. But her father, still a far more steady hand than she, was more than vibrant enough to handle things while she rummaged the outskirts for some of the more rare ingredients. This was the natural way of things. If he continued to hold her hand forever, she wouldn't be much help at all. In this case, her hunt was for a plant some called the syrup blossom. That name was misleading, since it didn't technically have anything to do with syrup and 'blossom' was a bit of a stretch. A visually unappealing looking bit of flora, unless you had spent all day looking for a patch. Then, it could be one of the best sights in the world. Carina had been careful all day. Wild animals didn't care much for civilization. Even hobbits were a fierce foe to fight when an entire town banded together. But the further out one got, the more padded feet and hoof steps could be heard. But after searching so long, she lost herself and bolted toward her slightly-leafy prey. It was almost as if she believed that someone else intended to scoop it up before she did, despite the fact that this was very unlikely. She made it about half way, missing the bait that had been carefully placed by an astute huntsman. Into the air she flew, bound at the leg. She shrieked out, her world flipped upside down before she knew what was happening. The first figure on the scene was not even vaguely shaped. It growled darkly as it made its guarded way over to her. Perhaps this wolf had been what the trap had been for, but she had little cognizance to evaluate the possibility. She thrashed around as it grew near, swinging wildly. ”Alright doggy, just stay over there, I'm sure we can get this sort just, ugh, keep your distance,” she had just enough of a mind to be somewhat thankful that this wolf had seemingly been separated from its kin. A sad thing, but perhaps enough that maybe she wouldn't die... somehow. [/ul] word count: 370 tag; Alexander note; HELP D:

One arrow, followed by another and one more. Each one pierced the wolf with startling accuracy. Almost instantly the wolf went down with a few yelps and whimpers. Alex, who had been hiding in the branches of the trees, winced at each sound of the wolf. Alex always held a soft spot for canines, and even wolves were no real exception for this. But at the same time, he also knew of his duty, and he knew of this wolf. It had been split off from its pack and had been wandering dangerously close to the Shire. Alexander knew that if left unchecked, it might hurt or even kill one of the Hobbits, and that was why he was here. Originally, the trap he'd set had been for the wolf, but when the little Hobbit had stumbled into it by accident, he didn't immediately free her, for fear of chasing away the wolf. He let her flail for a bit in order to draw its attention, bow aimed and ready to fire. Needless to say, she was never in any real danger. But that didn't stop the fact that the wolf, while incapacitated, was still wounded and would probably die soon. Potential threat to Hobbits or not, Alex, having a soft spot for canines, really couldn't bear to see the thing suffer; it pretty much tore his heart in two. Some Ranger he was. Hopping down from his perch in the foliage of the trees, Alex had made himself known, revealing himself to the Hobbit. Looking at the wolf and hearing its wounded whimpers, he placed his bow away and unsheathed his sword, looking briefly to Carina before making a couple motions. With his free hand he placed his palm on each ear before bringing it down in front of his eyes in one swift motion. The message was clear; close your eyes and cover your ears. Regardless of whether she did or not, the Ranger knelt down with the sword, and with one swift motion, ceased the wolf's pain. Well, that was done. Rising back to his feet, Alex looked at the Hobbit in the snare before taking a few steps over and cutting the rope that suspended her with one clean slice. He doubted that the tumble down would really do anything to hurt her. "Quite unusual for a halfling to venture into forests with wolves." He smirked, finding the whole thing rather amusing. He figured he should probably be a bit more cold, but oh well. tags: @carina notes: Rescue Ranger o3o CODED BY ELECTRIC OF GS

[/div]Carina had never spent much time thinking about the end. She had just severed the tether of childhood completely, which, while technically something that came just by aging, felt like it had taken a lot of hard work. Then again, in this moment, just being able to age would be a blessing. She'd be hard pressed to survive a wolf's hunger with all her faculties. Bound and upside down, she was utterly doomed. For her own fleeting pride, she readied herself to bop it a good one, though she found her eyes didn't want to remain open. They had sealed away the light of day when a curious sound followed by the wolf's yelping piqued her curiosity. It was strange to feel something other than dread again, but she opened her eyes to see a massively wounded, arrow filled carcass where her soon-to-be-predator had been. She couldn't help but stare. Carina had no choice but feel a massive sense of relief, she had survived after all but resigning herself to death. In front of her was the agent of that demise. Now, this agent was about to be dead instead. She had seen dead things before, but there was almost a weird bond between her and this wolf. She watched with baited breath as the gigantic seeming manning skillfully came into her view and over to the wolf. She tilted her head at his motions but quickly complied, sealing back up all of the senses that she could. Her body began to shake as the turbulent series of emotions all had spent much of its reserves. She knew what was about to happen to the wolf, but since she had been given the proper warning, she could spare herself from having the picture. ”Wah!” She called out, her eyes flashing open as her body flopped down to the soil. She began picking herself up. Her legs we wobbly and her skin felt cold, but the shock of gravity's grasp had shaken her closer to a normal state of being. Physically, at least. ”Right, well, I wanted to get... These over here...” She said, having trouble communicating. ”You're um... tall, I mean, thank you!” What was she thinking, he had saved her life! A thank you should have been the first thing to come. He was tall. An interesting observation to make about the person that had just sort of helped you. He couldn't really help but let out a small chuckle at the observation. He supposed in comparison that he actually was pretty tall to the little Hobbit in front of him. Though he would likely not say it in her company now, he actually was pretty average when it came to the race of Men. It was good at least to see that the trap had not harmed her, or left her in a foul mood. Though perhaps that might have been the result of the blood rushing to her brain from having been in that situation for a little bit. Still, he had to admit, she seemed rather different than most Hobbits that he came across. Most Hobbits, upon seeing Alexander in all his ranger glory (if it could really be called that), usually became wary or wrote him off as trouble and tried to get away from him as quickly as possible. This one seemed to be different though, she didn't immediately run off and try to get as far away from him as possible. Hell, she even thanked him for saving her life. He couldn't really remember the last time one of the little folk had acknowledged him as having helped them in any way. Sheathing his sword, he watched as she simply gathered her plants; was that what she had come out here for? Quite interesting indeed. Still, he was quite surprised that she had gone to so much effort to get a couple ingredients; he wondered what she needed those for. "If you need me to, I can guide you to the edge of the forest, and you can make your way back to your home." He doubted she lived so far away that she couldn't just walk her way back, otherwise he doubted she'd have made it this far in the condition she was in. tags: @carina notes: Follow Me CODED BY ELECTRIC OF GS

[/div]Just moments ago, she thought her life was all over. She had believed that her family would be left waiting for a return that was never to come. She was no fool, she knew that they wouldn't even be thinking about plants at that point. She could feel small pulses across her body as the extremities received new blood after a bit of a lapse. Her eyes would creep over to the wolf, only to snap back to the ranger. She didn't want to stare at death, but it was hard to avoid it. Carina fidgeted, conflicted with his offer. She didn't want to be bother. He had already saved her life, so asking anything further of him seemed like a bit much. She was already so far in his debt. But in his moment, being alone sounded as if it might literally be the worst thing in the world. She'd be so busy looking over her shoulder, she'd probably walk right into another trap. ”I... need you to,” she agreed simply, feeling guilty, ”I'm sure you have other business to tend to but, well... I could give you a reward!”It wasn't a happy excitement, it was deeper than that. She felt as if this was something that she needed to do. Carina's sense of danger was a bit warped at the moment, but she had been warned of Men and the perils they brought with them. It was a part of her culture, so it was unavoidable. But she figured she could always be afraid of him later if there came a reason for it. ”It won't be very grand I'm afraid,” she said, unsure how lavish the general palette of men was, ”But it'd be the least I could do.”Somewhere in her mind, she had misplaced the part where she explained the nature of her reward. She was too accustomed to others knowing who she was. [/ul] word count: 319 tag; Alexander note; :]

This was quite refreshing for him. He had yet to be patronized or ignored, or run away from. Oh there were a couple that tried to talk down to him that they didn't need his rescuing too. Those were always somewhat fun to deal with, mainly because he was pretty sure that even they weren't believing their own words. Oh he understood why they were like that; a scary looking man come in and help? You want to get away from him. So having a Hobbit actually be a bit appreciative was actually a pretty nice change for once. Still, he wouldn't take advantage of her hospitality. Waving his hand a little, he just lightly laughed. "I don't need a reward, just knowing that you're unharmed is good enough." He never expected one, there was no need to really take her up on her offer. She may have felt bad about it, but he saw no reason for her to feel bad. "The wolf was split off from its pack, there aren't be any more nearby." He explained to her, not only trying to tell her there was no issue, but that she really shouldn't worry about there being anymore dangers in the woods. "So don't worry about my business, I've already attended to it."Taking a few steps in the direction of the edge, Alexander waved to follow him. He didn't really feel a need to rush though. She probably wouldn't exactly be striding through the forest with the agility of a deer or anything. If she wished though, then he would at least engage in small talk, that couldn't really hurt, could it? "If you don't mind me asking, miss, what did you plan to do with those plants, anyway?" And even a ranger could be polite. tags: @carina notes: his business is sleeping on cold ground and shooting things CODED BY ELECTRIC OF GS

[/div]Carina paused to stare at him again. She had never considered what type of humor a Man might have. As a professional, she had considered their sense of taste. She had even considered how they might handle things like climbing or riding, since they started out so high up already. Comedy had seemed like something that would be universal, so much so that it had never crossed her mind. But now it did, because this almost had to be a joke. That was literally just like a line some hero in a story would say. ”Are you messing with me?” She asked, blunt but her was pure confusion, lacking any malice. She soon realized that her meaning might be easily confused since there was only one part of that the had seemed a bit off. ”This whole laughing off a reward business and sounding so noble on top of it. Everyone likes rewards.”It was a bother to only have stories and very momentary meetings to go off. Just going off impressions alone, he was more reigned in than she would have thought. From her understanding, humans began their battles with nature with a shouted battle cry and ended them with long looks in the mirror. Sort of the middle ground between elves and dwarfs that way. He seemed nothing like that. She followed after him as he started off, not wanting to get left behind. Even if the danger was gone, she didn't feel like she could be alone at this moment, not if she could help. ”I use it for baking, with the right touches and a few other friends in the bowl, these can really sweeten up a loaf,” she replied, neither wanting to bore him with the specifics nor give away too many of the secrets that made up her livelihood. ”That's what I do, I bake. Not quite as fancy as being a wandering hero,” she joked awkwardly. [/ul] word count: 323 tag; Alexander note; oh expectations vs reality

Yes, she was most peculiar indeed. Most people would have jumped on the chance to not have to pay their savior back anything. A chance to get your life saved and not have to do something big or go out of your way to do something nice for them? Well that sounded swell to many, but apparently not to this little halfling. He already had a feeling that she was going to be stubborn about it, if she was going to declare that everyone liked rewards. Well if that was the case, then he would simply turn her words around. He remained silent as she explained her livelihood as well; baking. Truly, sometimes he really did envy Hobbits and their simple lives. A mischievous smirk graced his lips. "Very well, if you are so insistent on offering a reward." He began. "Then the information you have given me will suffice as one. There are many times when I have to cook for myself, so that bit of information will help." Normally he had to have just simple rations of roasted meat or something that could be preserved or carried. Sometimes he got lucky and he would occasionally get some lembas bread from some of his elven friends, but he couldn't count on them all the time. No, once he became the Chieftain, he learned he had to be self sufficient. As the sound of foliage crunched under his boots, he felt rather satisfied with the answer that he had given her. He hoped it would satisfy her. "I will be sure to keep a look out for these plants in the future. To be quite frank, a life of vagrancy, the heroism of which is highly debatable, doesn't often allow for sweets." Needless to say, he didn't actually consider himself some legendary hero. Nope, as far as he was concerned, he was Alexander Elessar, Chieftain of the Rangers. tags: @carina notes: his business is sleeping on cold ground and shooting things CODED BY ELECTRIC OF GS

[/div]Information as a reward? It didn't feel like enough to even cover saving one of her feet. Such a small bit of knowledge was perhaps only an equal gift to saving her fingernails or something. But she didn't want to come across as boorish or pushy. If he didn't want to accept further reward, then that was his choice. She had offered and offered twice. It didn't feel right, but it was not her choice to make, so she would have to accept it. ”Not to press that issue, but anyone who chooses a life without sweets is some kind of hero, if you ask me. But if you're really sure that's enough,” she said hesitantly, ”Then you have that and my thanks.” It was less than she'd like to give, but it seemed that was the end of the discussion. It would be more difficult to imagine a life where she had to go without cake for a week, let alone long bouts of seperation. ”If I may, what is your name?” She asked, curious, ”Otherwise I'll have to make one up when I tell the story and you do not want me picking out names for nothing. Trust me on that.” Not a thing in the shop had been named by her and for good reason. The proper words never came to her. Her labels were always forgetful or overly silly. Sweets and adventure stories were shared for fun, but that didn't mean those involved wanted to feel like children. Given the circumstances, she'd forgive herself for not asking about it sooner. There had been a lot of things to cover. Not to mention that her heart was still beating abnormally fast and her mind was just starting to be able to work at a normal enough level. [/ul][/ul]

"It is. The truth is I rarely get thanks for anything I do anyway. It's just sort of expected of me." He reassured her. So if anything, being told thank you for actually having helped someone was quite more the reward than it might have appeared to anyone else. Again he felt a twinge of envy at the life of Hobbits; they could choose to take up simple, peaceful lives filled with warmth and the common courtesies that ought to be afforded to everyone. Plus he had been able to watch some of the parties from a distance; especially birthday parties. They really seemed to be quite the event. But he still hadn't given her his name. Right, he should probably get on that before she started getting irritated or something. "Still, my apologies for not telling you my name sooner; you can call me Hawke." And that was that. Was it his real name? No. But "Alexander" was a name that was privvy only to those closest to him. For anyone else in Eriador, whether it be Bree or the Shire, Hawke would suffice. The irony is that he was actually starting to get a sort of reputation around with that name. Apparently some people in Bree were actually starting to consider him to be scary. Well, that was life. Perhaps she would notice that he didn't ask about her name in response? It wasn't that he didn't care or that he didn't like her, but more that he felt no real need. Not to mention that he had a feeling that she wouldn't really remember him three days from now. You had a harrowing encounter, a ranger saved you, if you even recognized them as a ranger, and you went home. A week later it seemed like it was but a distant memory, one that you may even wonder if it really happened, or if it had just been some sort of bad dream. tags: @carina notes: well at least she got his strider name CODED BY ELECTRIC OF GS
